III._ The general solution of the absorbed dose equation Any expression for the absorbed dose containing interaction cross sections and particle fluences or other parameters pertinent to an actual radiation field is here called a solution to the absorbed dose equation, eq 3 or eq 5. The dosimetric units most widely used in radiology for dose quantification include exposure (C/kg air or roentgen [R]), the absorbed dose (Gy or rad), the equivalent dose (Sv or REM) and the effective dose (Sv or REM). This article describes the main features of these units and exemplifies radiology doses in a simple manner, through in- MOSFET dose values were compared with conceptus dose estimates derived from Monte Carlo simulation experiments. Conceptus doses in different stages of pregnancy were found to be up to 1.04 mGy, up to 5.8 mGy, and up to 12.6 mGy for pulmonary angiography, abdominopelvic and trauma CT scans, respectively. The absorbed doses in several predefined segments of the operator's brain were estimated in a typical interventional radiology irradiation scenario. The doses were normalized to the KAP values simulated for ten X-ray beam qualities and four projections (PA, RAO 25°, LAO 25° and CRA 25°). Of course, this technique uses continuous X-rays instead of a short pulse to make a picture, therefore patients are subject to a much higher absorbed dose of ionizing radiation.
